José Guerrero The Presence of Black (1950-1966)
07.05.2015 - 05.09.2015
After its exhibition in Granada (Centro José Guerrero and la Alhambra) and Madrid (La Casa de las Alhajas, Fundación Obra Social y Monte de Piedad), The Presence of Black, 1950-1966 will be shown at Fundació Suñol.
Organized by the Centro José Guerrero from Granada to commemorate the centenary of the birth of José Guerrero (Granada, 1914 – Barcelona, 1991), this exhibition is the first in-depth, monographic approach to what we may call the painter’s American years, which had the most decisive influence on his career. The exhibition begins with his first experiments with abstraction in the etchings and “portable frescoes” he made in the early fifties, which reveal a painter deeply interested in the possibilities of combining painting and architecture. The exhibition continues with Guerrero’s subsequent complete integration into American Abstract Expressionism in the mid-fifties, and concludes with the reencounter with his Spanish memory and return to his native country in 1965.
