Joan Cardells
Fundación Bancaja, Valencia
23/09/2021 – 30/01/2022
Curators: Tomàs Llorens and Boye Llorens
The Joan Cardells exhibition is an anthology of one of the key Valencian artists in contemporary Spanish art from the second half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st. The exhibition produced by the Bancaja Foundation is the largest retrospective of the Valencian artist to date, providing a review of Cardells’ production throughout his solo artistic career since 1976, when he left Equipo Realidad, until shortly before his death in 2019.
As this is the first exhibition after his death, the show is presented as a tribute to Joan Cardells through exhibiting a project that thrilled him till his last days. The retrospective is also a tribute to the historian and art critic Tomàs Llorens Serra, curator of the exhibition together with Boye Llorens Peters, who was working on the project until his death last June.
The exhibition, made up of two hundred pieces dated between 1976 and 2019 and with the presence of unpublished work, shows the work of Cardells in artistic disciplines such as sculpture and drawing, and with the usual materials in his production such as stitched cardboard, corrugated iron, cast iron, bronze, wax, and graphite on paper or marble.
The Suñol Foundation collaborates in this exhibition through the loan of the following work:
