He initially learned to work on the pottery wheel in his father’s workshop. Between 1952 and 1958 he studied at the Artistic Institute of Ceramics in Faenza and then moved to Milan, where he enrolled at the Brera Academy and worked as an assistant to Arnaldo Pomodoro and Lucio Fontana, two artists who also belong to our collection. At the end of the 1960s, Spagnulo began to work on his first sculptures, and he also exhibited more than once at the Venice Biennale.
The artist is characterized by the massive dimensions of his sculptures. He uses materials such as iron or Corten steel. In the 1990s he began to focus on other materials, such as terracotta and steel. The subject matter of these is generally based on abstract terms and tends towards conceptualism. Many of his works are exhibited in public places in important German cities such as Bochum and Italian cities such as Venice, Milan or Rome.
The Suñol Soler Collection contains three of his works. Two paintings, entitled Nerofumo (1977) and another untitled one from 1987. In addition to an iron sculpture entitled Da archeoologia (1980). His work was shown in the 2015-16 collective exhibition at the Fundació Suñol entitled ‘Italy: The Six Senses’.
