Considered one of the pioneers of media art and conceptual art in Spain, he studied at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Industriales in Barcelona and at the Pratt Graphic Center in New York, where he has lived since 1971. He has given and directed seminars at various institutions in Europe and the United States and in 2009 he received the Velázquez Prize for Plastic Arts.
His work contains a critical perspective, where the artist addresses social, political and communication issues. Among these, he deals with the relationship between public and private space within certain social frameworks or the manipulation of the media when it comes to censoring or spreading ideas. The metaphor of the media landscape or critical subjectivity are key terms to understand his productions. His works contain a clear processual dimension in which he usually makes the spectator participate directly. He uses multiple media: interventions in public space, video and photography, editing of printed publications, the Internet and new digital tools, multimedia installations, research projects, etc.
The Fundació Suñol preserves four works by the artist: The last ten minutes (1976), Estovalles ritual (1982), Meeting MACBA (2002) and Retrat de Pep Suñol (2009). A solo exhibition was dedicated to him in January 2014 entitled ‘Act 28: Muntadas/Franch’, which addressed the multiple collaborations that Antoni Muntadas and Enric Franch have carried out over almost thirty years.
