François Morellet

Chollet (França), 1926 - Chollet (França), 2016

François Morellet was a French painter and artist noted for his contributions to abstract and geometric art. He was a key figure in the development of kinetic art and painting based on mathematical systems. His work is characterized by the use of straight lines, grids, and simple geometric shapes, combined with an interest in visual perception and movement.

Morellet began exploring abstract art during the 1950s and was one of the founders of the group “GRAV” (Groupe de Recherche d’Art Visuel), which sought to integrate movement and perception into works of art. He experimented with different supports, such as light and movement, creating works that challenged the traditional gaze and involved the viewer in the visual process.

In addition to his painting, Morellet worked in other media such as sculpture and installation, using industrial and digital materials to explore geometry and movement. His influence has been essential in contemporary art, and his work has been exhibited in important international museums and galleries.
