Pello Irazu

Corazón, 1989

Sant Sebastià, 1963

Basque sculptor who revived contemporary sculpture in Spain in the 1980s. Born in Guipúzcoa, he studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of the Basque Country, where he graduated in sculpture in 1986. He regularly exhibits at the Soledad Lorenzo gallery in Madrid and at the John Weber Gallery in New York. His work is also part of important collections such as those of the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, the Reina Sofía Museum, the MACBA, the ARTIUM in Vitoria or the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art.

His first paintings with objects attached to them led him towards the discipline of sculpture. His work draws on the influence of the Basque sculptor Jorge Oteiza, and he carefully observes how he analysed the use of space. His artistic production stands out for its experimentation with various materials such as iron and wood and its aim of seeking emotion in the viewer, not in the image. His pieces are characterized by a personal use of color applied directly to them, which rejects the industrial finish of the works and gives them a remarkable pictorial dimension. He moves through different styles such as constructivism, minimalism and conceptualism.

The Fundació Suñol keeps two of his works in its collection: Corazón (1989) and Plural (1991). His work was exhibited in the foundation’s 2016 exhibition called ‘Diálogos de la mirada’.
