Francesc Català-Roca

Homenatge a Miró, 1983

Valls (Tarragona), 1922 - Barcelona, 1998

Important figure in contemporary Spanish photography. His father, Pere Català Pic, passed on his love for photography. His photographic work during the forties, fifties and sixties put Spain in the spotlight in the world of new urban photography. He managed to perfectly capture the essence of the city and the Spanish society of the 20th century. His work can be compared to what other photographers outside Spain like Robert Doisneau or Henri Cartier-Bresson did.

With his camera, he portrayed important moments of artistic creation and the more human face of artists such as Joan Miró and Salvador Dalí. Undoubtedly, his number marked the passing of the pre-war vanguard represented by his father Pere Català Pic (1889-1971) and the new documentary vanguard. He is also known for illustrating with photographs several books generally on artistic themes and for working with important magazines and publications such as ‘La Vanguardia’ or ‘Destino’. He stood out for portraying reality with great technique and sensitivity given the closeness he achieved with those he photographed. His work is based on a neorealist concept of the image, always looking for an unusual point of view and a human setting.

The Suñol Soler Collection preserves one of his photographic works entitled Homenaje a Miró (1983)
