From May 17 to July 21, 2024, the Warhol & Vijande, date in Madrid exhibition presents at the Lázaro Galdiano Museum, that start from Andy Warhol’s visit to Spain in 1983 with the help of the gallery owner Fernando Vijande, and which present 20 portraits that photographer Christopher Makos made of his close friend Andy Warhol. Later, the exhibition can be seen at the headquarters of the Fundació Suñol in Barcelona.
The exhibition Warhol & Vijande, date in Madrid presents at the Museo Lázaro Galdiano in Madrid a selection of 20 photographs from the series ‘Altered Images’, by Christopher Makos, photographer and friend of Warhol, who portrays the iconic artist posing with wigs and makeup, subverting his gender and configuring his most personal and intimate portrait. These photographs are accompanied by Warhol’s works from the Suñol Soler Collection, such as the large-format Mao and the portrait of Fernando Vijande, also by the king of Pop Art, along with other related works by American artists such as Robert Mapplethorpe and Richard Avedon, create a unique dialogue with the works of the Lázaro Galdiano Museum. The exhibition also investigates Warhol’s visit to Madrid in 1983 thanks to the photography collections of Luis Pérez-Mínguez, Miguel Trillo, Javier Porto and Teresa Nieto, which articulate a visual and sociological journey with unprecedented aspects of that visit.
