Manolo Quejido. Distancia sin medida [Distance without measure]
Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Palacio de Velázquez (Parque del Retiro, Madrid)
21/10/2022 – 16/5/2023
The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (MNCARS) presents Distancia sin medida [Distance without measure], an exhibition that pays tribute to the career of Manolo Quejido (Sevilla, 1946). The exhibition will provide the opportunity to become aware of the lucidity and rigor of his plastic investigations as well as his radically critical character, which invites us to redefine the parameters from which we think and look at painting.
The exhibition begins with the works Deliriums, Siluetas y Secuencias (1969-1974), black and white reductions of the three ways with which the artist began his production: expressionism, pop and geometric experimentation, advancing through very diverse styles as with Cartulinas, pictorial studies adjusted to the standard format of cardboard, 100 x 70 cm. His work culminates by using painting to express his revulsion towards what he calls a world in a state of “generalized mediation”, in his words “the unbearable image produced by timocracy through the State, war, consumerism and the media”—showing itself as the antithesis of this movement since 1993. Faced with the unstoppable empire of consumption, he accumulates enlarged images of labels and offers, insisting on their banality.
The Suñol Foundation collaborates in this exhibition by lending the work:
