A prominent painter of contemporary Spanish art. He studied Philosophy at the Autonomous University of Madrid between 1970 and 1974. At the beginning of his career, he was associated with the artistic group of the New Figuration of Madrid. In fact, his first solo exhibition took place at the Buades Gallery in Madrid in 1975, after finishing his university studies. This is where his colleague Guillermo Pérez Villalta introduced him to the artistic world.

Cobo is associated with the creation of surrealist and colourful works, the sceptical and sarcastic vision of reality is always present in his creations. After his stay in Madrid he returned to his hometown around the eighties. Here he took as a reference the Andalusian Baroque, the Spanish pictorial tradition and its great geniuses such as Goya or Picasso, whose influence we see in his engravings made at that time. From then on, Cobo would also move away from his beginnings to connect with more international movements such as neo-expressionism, Italian trans-avant-garde or English pop. At the end of his life, we find a repeated iconography in his painting, with figures such as the joker, the labyrinth, the map or the chameleon being frequent. In recent years, the geometric base lost prominence in his work and he concentrated on the figure and the written message. Cobo participated in important individual and collective exhibitions, including ‘El Salón de los 16’ (1981-1991) and the ‘Bienal de Sao Paulo (1981).

The Fundació Suñol preserves eleven of his paintings, including Gran tuffatore (1980) or Sweet swimmers 3, 3 selfwachers (1981-82). In 2009, the Museo Nacional Centro de Artes Reina Sofia held a collective exhibition entitled ‘Los esquizos de Madrid: Figuración madrileña de los 70’, in which the Fundació Suñol participated by lending some of the works by artists from the Suñol Soler collection, including those by Cobo.
