Luis Frangella

La jarra vertiente o Máquina de dibujar, 1980

Buenos Aires, 1944 - Nova York, 1990

Born in 1944 in Buenos Aires, Luis Frangella studied architecture at the university in his hometown, graduating in 1972. Only a year later he would move to Cambridge (Massachusetts) thanks to a scholarship to work as a Research Fellow in the area of Advanced Visual Studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. There he coincided, among others, with Juan Navarro Baldeweg, Maryanne Amacher and John Cage. At this time, Frangella began his pictorial journey, creating a lucid and subtle universe that responds to his particular perception of the relationships between objects and their proportions, in a constant search for the original veracity of things.

His laboratory-workshop becomes a space that generates ideas and an engine of permanent learning, from where the artist listens to the world and transforms what he perceives. His work, primarily experimental, investigates the form and presence of each object, and is worked from the most objective reasoning in combination with the most subjective emotion. His works range between a reflection on apparent reality, his empirical displacement towards other coordinates and the final metamorphosis that reveals to us that everything can be transformed and coexist peacefully.

In 1976 he moved to New York, where he continued his artistic development, as well as helping to organize the first exhibitions of Limbo (an artists’ club) in the early 80s. In 1982 he would receive the Guggenheim Fellowship and, two years later, he would present several expressionist paintings on old car doors in a solo exhibition at the Civilian Warfare gallery. By the end of that decade he was already exhibiting regularly in Buenos Aires, Barcelona and Madrid, as well as at the Julian Pretto Gallery in SoHo. He died young, at the age of 46, due to AIDS.

In 2011, the Suñol Foundation dedicated the exhibition ‘The pouring jug or drawing machine’ to him, which showed some of the artist’s works that are part of the Suñol Soler Collection along with others.
