Ramon Guillen-Balmes

Arqueologia d’artista per, 1991 - 1992

Cornellà (Barcelona), 1954 - Barcelona, 2001

Catalan artist known for his sculptures and engravings. Born in Cornellà de Llobregat, he spent his youth in Font Romeu (France). He returned to Barcelona to study at L’Escola de Llotja from 1973 to 1978, when he joined the Taller Experimental de Artes Plásticas, made up of sculptors and painters from Llotja and Massana. In 1980, together with Elena Carbonell, Manel Civit and Pedro Saralegui, he created the sculptural group called Grupo Usquam. They stood out for conceiving volume within space, that is, they did not clear the material to achieve it, but rather they built it by assembling different materials. He was a teacher at the Escola Massana until his premature death at the age of 47.

His conceptual works touch on the notions of desire, automatism and the anatomical forms of the human body. They clearly show the influence of the Dada movement, since the artist generally uses everyday objects (objets trouvés) and decontextualizes them to form his artistic productions. White and natural wood are the predominant colors throughout his work, which come from the models he made in his early days. He also created Panoplias eólicas, larger works designed to be moved by the wind.

The Fundació preserves 3 of his works: Arqueologia d’artista per (1991-92), Modelo de uso núm. 5 (1992) and Petit suport per a Txema Retama (1993). The latter is part of the educational program #ArtacasaSuñolSoler, created by the Fundació Suñol and the Fundació Glòria Soler so that the contemporary art works in our collection can be discovered at home and with the family. In addition, his work was exhibited in the foundation’s collective exhibition entitled ‘Diálogos de la mirada’ in 2016.
