Eva Lootz was born in Vienna in 1940, the city where she graduated in Film and Television Direction and later expanded her knowledge by studying Musicology, Philosophy and Plastic Arts. At the end of the 60s she moved to Madrid, where she began her artistic journey by participating in her first exhibitions. The Ovidio Gallery in Madrid hosted her first exhibition, and she participated in the first issue of the iconic Humo Magazine. Developing a mainly sculptural work, her beginnings deal with the devaluation of matter towards the idea through ephemeral materials such as cotton, soil or seeds coated in paraffin.
It is clear that Lootz’s work is strongly marked by the interaction between matter and language. For this reason, she has a great influence on the knowledge of the materials used and how they behave. However, and delving deeper into the themes addressed, we can find concepts as varied as transit, movement and travel, or freedom and femininity, as well as the passage of time and nature. Her work proposes a continuous art, where each proposal envelops the space and the viewer through an intersensory gaze.
It is worth noting that her work also travels through heterogeneous registers such as drawing, engraving, video or photography. Although her most characteristic work is developed through sculptural installation.
Regarding her exhibition route, she has developed mainly in northern Europe, in spaces such as the Barbara Farber Gallery in the Netherlands, the Museum of Public Art in Sweden or the Kunsthallen Brandts Klaedefabrik in Denmark; and in Spain, spaces such as the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the MACBA or the Centro de Artes Visuales Fundación Helga de Alvear. His work can be found in the collections of most Spanish art centers, foundations and museums, totaling more than twenty.
In 2024, the Suñol Foundation dedicated the exhibition ‘Walking with the River’ to him, which included several works by the artist and others lent by institutions and private collections.
