Arnaldo Pomodoro

Rotante massimo III, 1967-1968

Morciano di Romagna (Itàlia), 1926

Italian sculptor, costume designer and set designer. He trained as a quantity surveyor at the Technical Institute for Quantity Surveyors in Rimini. Later he became interested in art and set design and went to study at the Pesaro Art Institute.

A geometric spirit predominates in his style. He is an artist known for his sculptural spheres made of bronze, the predominant material in the creation of his works of art. Pomodoro manages to create a contrast that is powerful to the eye, but at the same time soft and complex given their rounded shape, where we find different incisions that enhance a play of light and dark. They are reminiscent of the hidden gears of machinery that are only visible through the cracks and cuts that break the exterior surfaces. The exterior space does not exist in his works, everything happens inside, where the enclosed “entrails” struggle to get out of the smooth and shiny walls. Some of these can be found in the Vatican museums in Rome.

The Suñol Soler Collection preserves a unique sculpture by the artist, one of these renowned spheres entitled Rotante massimo III (1967-68). In addition to 3 lithographs.
