Joan Rom

Fora el marc II, 1990

Barcelona, 1954

He studied fine arts at the University of Barcelona, first interested in painting, but later moving on to sculpture, using waste materials and found objects. In 1998 he decided to abandon his activity as an artist to devote himself to teaching.

His beginnings were marked by large-format painting linked to symbolic abstraction. But it was not long before he became interested in the three-dimensionality offered by sculpture. He used unconventional “found” materials of industrial origin, such as rubber, glass or plastic, or materials close to nature, such as leather or wool. Therefore, we would relate him to Arte Povera, but he also falls into a conceptual and minimalist style. In terms of materials, he maintained a duality between technology and nature, which became the theme of his work, the analysis of the relationship between the natural and the artificial. Generally, his works have a poetic meaning.

The Suñol Soler Collection preserves 3 sculptures and a graphic work by the artist. In October 2013, the Suñol Foundation held a monographic exhibition entitled ‘Joan Rom: E.R.T’.
